Do you feel sluggish or tired throughout the day? Has someone told you you snore extremely loudly and breathe irregularly while sleeping? Do you have elevated blood pressure that your primary care physician finds difficult to control? Do you have headaches in the morning, have gained weight recently, and have difficulty concentrating on your work? Have you found yourself falling asleep behind the wheel?

If you answered “yes” to any of these questions, the culprit could be sleep apnea. The Moonlight Sleep REMedies treats snoring and obstructive sleep apnea with laser, oral appliance therapy and myofunctional therapy – effective alternatives to Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP), in case you cannot tolerate it.

Dr. Mika Miyamoto, DMD, has been a member of the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM), International Academy of Sleep (IAOS), and American Academy of Sleep Medicine (AASM) to provide treatment in collaboration with your primary care physician and other healthcare providers.

Do You Have Sleep Apnea?

Sleep apnea is when your breathing repeatedly stops and starts again while you sleep due to your blocked airway. This condition can disrupt your sleep and is linked to serious health issues like heart disease, stroke, and diabetes.

The more concerning fact is that many people with sleep apnea don’t even realize they have it. This unawareness can affect their daily life, making them tired at work or school. While the condition can affect anyone, it is observed more frequently in men than women. Also, it is a fact that 80% of people with sleep apnea are not being diagnosed currently.

The most frequent form of this condition is obstructive sleep apnea (OSA). It happens because the muscles in your throat relax excessively, which blocks the air passage. This blockage causes you to wake up momentarily to breathe, which wreaks havoc on your sleep cycle and leaves you mentally and physically drained the next day.

Persistent, chronic snoring is a common sign of sleep apnea, but here are some other symptoms:

Feeling exhausted during the day

Suddenly waking up coughing or feeling like you cannot breathe

Not feeling interested in sexual activities

Sweating a lot at night

Starting your day with a headache

Finding it hard to think clearly or remember things during the day

Having high blood pressure

Waking up with a dry mouth or sore throat

Sometimes, the people you live with will spot these symptoms before you do. They might tell you that the sound of your snores is deafening, you stop breathing for a bit or toss and turn a lot in your sleep. If you are hearing this from them, scheduling a consultation with Dr. Miyamoto at Moonlight Sleep REMedies is recommended.

How We Diagnose Your Sleep Apnea

You might wonder, “How can a dentist tell if I have sleep apnea?” You’re right – not all dentists can. However, dental sleep practitioners like Dr. Miyamoto are uniquely positioned to notice signs of sleep apnea because they know what the structure of your mouth and throat is supposed to look like.

Suppose there is any physical obstruction in the way that is not letting you breathe at night. In that case, we can identify it by thoroughly examining your oral structure and a CBCT (Cone Beam Computed Tomography) scan.

That said, diagnosis of sleep apnea is only complete with a sleep study. After the physical examination, if we suspect sleep apnea, we will set you up with an at-home sleep study kit so you can undergo the testing in the comfort of your bed rather than spending the night in a sleep lab. We may refer you to a lab if your breathing is severely disordered.

The home sleep kit comes with several sensors and a small recording device. These sensors are designed to monitor various aspects of your sleep, such as your:

  • Breathing
  • Oxygen levels in your blood
  • Heart rate
  • Sleeping position

Before bed, you will attach these sensors to your body according to the instructions. You will receive clear guidelines on where each sensor should go. The idea is to sleep as you normally would, with the kit recording everything it needs throughout the night.

The data collected gives us insights into how you breathe while you sleep. We’re looking for signs of apnea events (moments when you stop breathing) and hypopnea events (moments of shallow breathing), which are key indicators of sleep apnea.

Once you have completed the night’s sleep with the kit, your sleep data will be stored in a cloud and we get to see the result right away.  We will analyze the data and order an official diagnosis and treatment recommendation from a board-certified sleep medicine physician.  Meanwhile, you can dispose of the used home sleep study kit or recycle it per manufacturer instructions.  Once we receive the official sleep study report from the sleep physician we work with, we will discuss the results with you and recommend the next steps – oral appliance therapy, NightLase® (laser therapy), myofunctional therapy or any combination of these.
