Dr. Mika Miyamoto, DMD

Dr. Mika was born and raised in Japan. Immediately after graduating with a B.A. degree in British/American literature in Tokyo. In 1990, she had an opportunity to move to Portland, OR. She worked as a legal assistant in a local law firm for over 4 years in downtown Portland. After her legal career, she went on to Oregon Health Science University School of Dentistry and graduated in 1999, obtaining her Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD) title. After working as an associate dentist for a few years, she opened her own private practice in 2002. She was the first dentist to open a dental practice in the up-and-coming new area called Pearl District in Northwest part of downtown Portland.

Over the years, she became a well-respected cosmetic and full mouth reconstruction dentist in the community. Being able to improve her patients’ quality of life by improving their smile and oral functions was a joy to her. She felt honored to be able to touch each patient’s life as a dentist. In 2020, she retired from being a restorative dentist due to her permanent neck and shoulder injuries. While recovering from them, she had an unexpected opportunity to learn about sleep disorders such as sleep apnea and snoring. She learned how sleep disorders correlate with multiple systemic diseases, yet somehow, 80% of sleep apnea patients are not being diagnosed by their medical doctors. Many of these patients end up with numerous health conditions as a result of misdiagnosis, leading to their premature death. As a dentist, she can recognize the signs of sleep apnea in patients’ mouth- which most medical doctors don’t see. She also found out that she could help patients test for sleep apnea and treat them. Excited that she could still help improve patients’ lives in areas other than cosmetic and full mouth rehabilitation, she decided to become a dentist that specializes in sleep apnea and snoring treatments. Since then, she continues taking countless continuing education classes and training courses to expand her knowledge on the topic. She also belongs to the American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) and International Academy of Sleep (IAOS) to ensure she is always informed with the most updated information on sleep disorders. As always, Dr. Mika approaches sleep disorders in both a holistic and comprehensive way. She believes that treating sleep apnea and snoring requires individualized, multi-disciplinary solutions. Instead of fitting CPAP intolerant patients into a one-size fits all oral appliance, she takes extra steps to figure out the right combination of treatment modalities by utilizing CBCT scan, Eccovision Pharyngometer/Rhinometer, and a home sleep test unit to get the perfect and most effective fit.

When she is not commuting to be with her team and patients at the clinic, she enjoys staying at her home in beautiful Washougal, WA, relaxing with her four-legged furry children (Pomeranians), Daisy and Meonji.
