Dr. Mika Miyamoto, DMD

Dr. Mika was born and raised in Japan. Immediately after graduating with a B.A. degree in British/American literature in Tokyo in1990, she had an opportunity to move to Portland, OR. She worked as a legal assistant in a local law firm for over 4 years in downtown Portland. After the legal career, she went on to Oregon Health Science University School of Dentistry and graduated in 1999 with Doctor of Dental Medicine (DMD). After working as an associate dentist for a few years, she opened her own private practice in 2002. She was the first dentist to open a dental practice in the up-and-coming new area called Pearl District in Northwest part of downtown Portland.

Over the years, she became a well-respected cosmetic and full mouth reconstruction dentist in the community. She really enjoyed contributing to help her patients’ quality of life by improving their smile and the oral function. She felt honored to be able to touch each patient’s life as a dentist. In 2020, she retired from being a restoration dentist due to a permanent neck and shoulder injuries. While she was recovering from them, she had an unexpected opportunity to learn about sleep disorders such as sleep apnea and snoring. She learned how sleep disorder correlates with multiple systemic diseases and 80% of sleep apnea patients are not being diagnosed by their medical doctors. Therefore, many of these patients ends up developing serious health conditions which eventually lead them to a premature death. She learned that as a dentist, she can recognize the signs of sleep apnea in patients’ mouth which medical doctors don’t see in general. She also found out that she could help patients test for sleep apnea and treat them. When she realized that, she got excited that she could still help improve patients’ life other than cosmetic and full mouth rehabilitation. Once she decided to become a dentist who specializes in sleep apnea and snoring treatments, she has been taking countless continuing education classes and trainings. She also belongs to American Academy of Dental Sleep Medicine (AADSM) and International Academy of Sleep (IAOS) to make sure she is being informed with the updated information of sleep disorders. Just like how she has always been, she approaches sleep disorder patients holistic and comprehensive way. She believes that treating sleep apnea and snoring requires an individualized multi-disciplinary solution. Unlike fitting all the CPAP intolerance and failed patients into oral appliance, she takes extra steps to figure out the right combination of treatment modalities by utilizing CBCT scan, Eccovision Pharyngometer/Rhinometer, and a home sleep test unit.

When she is not commuting to be with her team and patients at the clinic, she enjoys staying at her home in beautiful Washougal, WA, relaxing with her four-legged furry children (Pomeranians), Daisy and Meonji.
